For a long time, people on Aruba gave San Nicolas a wide berth. The old refinery town at the south-east end of the island was a place you drove past, not a place you went for a night out. In September 2026 the same streets filled up again and again: for a painting made by more than a hundred people, a runway on the stone terraces of a grotto, three nights of art in empty shopfronts, and walls that changed colour while the town watched.
This is the story of that week, Art Week Aruba 2026, and of the question it asked.
How we got here
Tito Bolivar will tell you he is not an artist himself. In 2015 he saw in Bogotá what street art can do for a neighbourhood, and in 2016 he started ArtisA, short for Art is Aruba, in San Nicolas. The first walls went up that year. Three years later Forbes called San Nicolas the Street Art Capital of the Caribbean.
The rest came one step at a time: the ArtisA Gallery in 2021, one week in September for all the big events from 2022, Space21 in 2023 for the island’s makers. Last December ArtisA took Aruba to Red Dot Miami for the first time and came home with the Best Gallery Award, shared with Perseus Gallery. It was in Miami that this year’s theme was first shown.

“Our vision is not only to celebrate art but also to create meaningful experiences that connect culture, community, and place.”Tito Bolivar, director of ArtisA, 2026
The question: Nature × Mankind
Every Art Week asks one question. In 2025 it was Justice. For 2026 it was Nature × Mankind: Shape, Shift, Sustain.
On an island this small, nature is never a backdrop. The trade wind bends the fofoti trees, the coral coast and the desert set the limits, and the sea is never more than a few minutes away. So the artists were asked: how do we shape this island, how does it shape us, and what do we keep?
“Living on a small island like Aruba reminds us daily of the delicate balance between people and the environment that sustains us.”From ArtisA’s 2026 letter to its partners

ArtTable: 100+ canvases. 1 painting.
Art Week opened on the Promenade. Every guest found a canvas, tied on an apron and took a glass. Six Aruban artists guided the night: Erika Moran, Peter van den Heuvel, Alejandra Vallejo, Andre Henderson, Elvis Tromp and Jean Cherouny. They went from easel to easel with the first lines, the colours, and the courage to keep going. Nobody needed experience.
Astoria Wines poured all evening, bites came to the canvas and live music carried the night. Then came the moment ArtTable is named for: the canvases came together as one painting, more than a hundred hands on a single picture.

Art Fashion: a runway in a grotto
Two nights later the runway moved into the rock. On the stone terraces of Grot di Lourdes, eight collections walked in answer to Nature × Mankind. Established designers, students, artisans and prison-based creators shared one stage. There was fabric spun from recycled plastic bottles, and a student collection on a real runway.
Art Fashion has always been fashion with a cause: each look spoke to freedom, visibility and justice, as much as to the cut.

Aruba Art Fair: the whole street a gallery
Then the town itself became the gallery. For the ninth Aruba Art Fair, empty buildings and shopfronts in San Nicolas turned into rooms full of work by more than 100 artists. Between the rooms, three nights of music on the stage, food, and neighbours meeting visitors in the street.

A lot of the work found a home that weekend. Some of it is still waiting for one, for example:

The Mural Festival: the silent one
While all of this happened, the eighth Mural Festival worked quietly around it. It started a few days before Art Week and finished during the fair. Muralists worked from sunrise to sunset, on lifts and ladders, and the walls changed a little every time you walked past.
Every year 10 to 15 new walls go up in San Nicolas, by artists from 11 countries. The town now counts more than 80 murals. And unlike the rest of the week, the walls stay.

The people you did not see
A week like this is carried by many hands. Volunteers set up, poured, guided and cleaned, among them young Europeans who came to San Nicolas through the European Solidarity Corps. Photographers Nieya van Nie and REXARUBA and the ARUSHOTS film team caught the week so the rest of the world could see it. Astoria Wines, our partners, and every artist, designer and muralist made it real.
Masha danki.
