Ad Rekkers is a Dutch visual artist and educator whose practice centres on sculpture and three-dimensional assemblage. He settled in Aruba in 1999, where alongside his studio work he taught for many years as a primary school teacher and CKV (arts and cultural education) instructor at the Schakel school — a double life as maker and educator that still shapes the way he works. His pieces are built from encounters between opposites. On one side, natural material: curved, sun-bleached driftwood shaped by the sea before it ever reaches his hands. On the other, the straight edges and hard surfaces of industrial elements. Rekkers assembles the two into constructions that read as both object and image, moving freely between painting and assemblage techniques. Colour is a structuring device rather than a decoration in his work — an approach he has explored through exhibitions built around strict chromatic frameworks, from the black-and-white contrasts of Where Black Meets White (2015) to the reduced palette of Primary Colors (2022) at the Biblioteca Nacional Aruba. His work is exhibited and available in Aruba, including at ArtisA in San Nicolas.
